A few years ago it seemed like a good idea to buy a Thule roof rack, the idea being that the bars and fittings can go from car to car only requiring new mounting feet to fit the rack to specific cars. In the event things didn't quite work out so I have now bought two sets of bars and three sets of different mounts - fortunately the old mounts were snapped up by someone on gumtree with the same problem.
Things were apparently much simpler in the old days.

ReplyDeleteWe are only restricted by our lack of imagination. I think this is one of the best problem solving solutions I have seen in a long time. I once carried my yacht 'Mariners' 37 foot mast a short distance along the local road tied to my young wifes Morris 1100 - so I sense a kindred spirit in this great photo - wonder what the make of car is? An old Alvis maybe??
ReplyDeleteAlden, I've been trying to find you for months... not having seen you for maybe 40 years! I'm nearing completion of a 6m dory & thought you might like to visit. Writing/playing music too. Give me a call if you're keen, 4360997. We own Longreach Nursery at 473 Riverside Drive. Be good to see you. Cheers, Tony King.
DeleteHi Tony - yes it would be great to see you and your 6m dory (that's quite a big dory!). You live only minutes away from me - but I am in the UK at the moment awaiting the birth of a grandchild, so I'll be in contact when we get back - nice to hear from you.
DeleteNice one Alden, I used to be able to wheel the spars for our yawl down to the boatyard, but the main mast was only 30 feet http://bursledonblog.blogspot.co.uk/2009/04/back-in-water.html
ReplyDeleteNo idea about the car, I also had a morris 1100 a truly hateful example.
Alden, reminds me of When I brought a complete roller furler home. It was slightly longer than the car so it drooped being unsupported over the bonnet. Solved by a prop tied between the furler and the car's grille.
ReplyDeleteMark, I love hearing those sorts of stories - I think we have a duty to the cosmos to undertake the odd extreme, non PC activity from time to time to keep the universe honest!
