Hamble Point

The Hamble river flows out into Southampton Water and the Solent beyond. From Hamble Point the outgoing tide starts to reveal the long shingle spit.

To the left of the picture is the east bank of the river, in the distance is Cowes on the Isle of Wight and on the right Calshott Castle and activity centre.

Across Southampton water is the power station at Fawley, closer to the spit is staring to emerge, the slick water indicates some of the local currents and eddies.

The channel is well marked by posts and lights, terminating at Hamble Point South cardinal buoy. This hardy dinghy sailor was making good progress despite the storng outgoing tide.
